Proceeding alongside the beach
that leads to the airport we come
to Kalamaki yet another tourist
destination of Zakynthos. This wide
beach has tall rocks at its edges
with sandy hills (ammolofoi,
or ammokoulomoi as the
Zakynthians call
them) standing over it. Sea lilies
grow on the beach, lending the
whole region an exotic note.

To the left are the impressive
limestone rocks, the so-called Yipsolithoi
or Ipsolithoi.The road leads
immediately after to the islands most important tourist
resort, Laganas, with,
at 9 km long, one of the largest
sandy beaches in Greece. It is one
of the most populated and visited parts of
Zakynthos. Continuing on, we
encounter Ayios Sostis and the
beach of Porto Koukla, with the
green vegetation literally touching
the blue waters'. |
We should not forget that the gulf
ofLaganas is part of the area where measures for the protection of the
loggerhead turtle are applied.
The view of the beach is beautiful,
and it is not by chance that the female turtles have chosen to lay their eggs
there.
